‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Protestors Fight Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court Nomination: ‘He Will Take Away Women’s Basic Rights’

The liberal advocacy group Demand Justice channeled Hulu’s Emmy-winning “The Handmaid’s Tale” while protesting Brett Kavanaugh‘s Supreme Court nomination in Washington D.C. Kavanaugh is taking part in three confirmation hearings this week after being nominated for the Supreme Court by Donald Trump. Female members of Demand Justice appeared outside the meeting hall dressed in the red cloaks made famous by the Hulu drama series.

“Brett Kavanaugh is an extremist ideologue who, if confirmed to the Supreme Court, will take away women’s basic rights,” the group said in a statement. Demand Justice elaborated on the protest by telling The Hill its mission is to ring the alarm about Kavanaugh’s “anti-abortion, anti-healthcare, and anti-women” views.

“Right now in America, far too many women of color cannot access safe, affordable healthcare and the ability to decide whether, when and how to raise thriving families is out of reach,” the group said. “Brett Kavanaugh will take this already harsh reality and make it worse.”

Demand Justice’s protest involving “Handmaid’s Tale” outfits is hardly the first time advocacy organizations and protest groups have utilized the Hulu series to make a political statement in real life. “The Handmaid’s Tale” made headlines July 23 when women took to the streets of Philadelphia dressed in red “Handmaid’s” cloaks to protest Mike Pence’s visit to the city. Other “Handmaid’s”-inspired protests have taken place in London, Ireland, and Argentina.
