Campaign Director

Location: Washington, DC

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a Campaign Director to oversee the day-to-day conducting of issue campaigns, which will include communications, digital, field, and policy components. The Campaign Director will be responsible for strategizing and executing issue campaigns as we build a movement to restore the federal courts’ ideological balance and legitimacy. This position reports to the Chief Counsel.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Act as lead strategist on several, high-priority initiatives, including our court reform campaign.
    Identify and cultivate relationships with allied organizations, grassroots actors, and influencers who can serve as partners on our priority initiatives.
  • Devise and manage budgets for issue campaigns.
  • Oversee public opinion research and message development related to these issue campaigns and development of public-facing collateral to present the most compelling intellectual and political arguments behind our key initiatives.
  • Coordinate work across our communications, digital strategy, and field teams in order to ensure our campaigns are fully integrated.
  • Serve as a representative of the organization at coalition convenings and public events.
  • Confer with senior management on new campaign opportunities and provide input on strategic direction of the organization.
  • Conduct regular progress updates and reflections throughout the campaigns to optimize our efforts.

Communications Director

Location: Washington, DC

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a Communications Director to help build our movement to restore the ideological balance and legitimacy of the federal courts. The Communications Director will serve as a media strategist guiding both our paid and earned media efforts. This position manages day-to-day press outreach to promote our work, conducts rapid response in the face of news developments affecting our issue space, and will produce sharp, messaging materials to empower our member activists and our external allies. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to think strategically about communications and research, incredible attention to detail, and strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Manage day-to-day external communications activities for Demand Justice, and the internal processes related to those activities.
  • Develop and execute communications plans, integrating earned, paid, and new media, to advance Demand Justice Initiative’s goals.
  • Work in partnership with Demand Justice Initiative’s leadership and consultants on development of paid media efforts and on project polling and messaging.
  • Draft press materials, including talking points, press advisories and releases, op-eds, and memos in support of communications plans and goals.
  • Build relationships with print, broadcast and online reporters, editors, and producers.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for Demand Justice with partner organizations, key stakeholders, and the media, as needed.
  • Develop local media outreach strategy to promote Demand Justice Initiative’s efforts on the ground in key states.
  • Manage communications staff and delegate responsibilities accordingly.
  • Monitor risks and opportunities to advance Demand Justice Initiative’s position and brand as a new, progressive organization.
  • Produce detailed reports of communications activities and successes.
  • Remain flexible and perform additional duties, as required.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Minimum experience of 4-6 years in communications, public relations, or advocacy work. Political campaign or Capitol Hill experience a plus.
  • Experience landing high-profile stories and working with reporters, editors, editorial boards, columnists, bookers, and thought leaders;
  • Exceptional writing skills for both press and general audiences. Writing should be sharp, personable, and memorable. Must possess ability to write in voice of others.
  • Familiarity and aptitude with using social media as an earned media tool.
  • Experience framing research products into communications products. Demonstrated ability to identify communications needs based on research and to work with research and campaign teams to achieve objectives.
  • Smart political judgment and ability to anticipate how others will respond to our work.
  • Calm in a crisis, and with great instincts.
  • Expertise in working independently and juggling competing priorities with strict deadlines;
  • Proven track record for being a self-starter;
  • Experience managing a team and effectively delegating responsibilities.

Deputy Organizing Director

Location: Washington, DC

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a Deputy National Organizing Director to assist in developing and managing an ambitious field and outreach program to grow our movement to restore the ideological balance and legitimacy of the federal courts. Working under the National Organizing Director, this position will take a lead role in supervising the day-to-day activities of organizers and volunteers in key states so as to build a durable, progressive infrastructure around the issue of the courts. . The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, incredible attention to detail, and strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and reports to the National Organizing Director.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Takes lead role in implementing our national field and outreach program, under the direction of the National Organizing Director.
  • Creates and manages a campus organizing strategy in order to identify and promote student-led organizations committed to elevating the courts as a key issue.
  • Provide guidance and operational support to our organizers and volunteers based in key states
  • Track and measure outcomes of efforts, refining strategy as appropriate.
  • Assist in managing for vendors and contracts related to field and outreach program.s.
  • Assists National Organizing Director with other priorities as needed.

Law Clerk

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a law student to serve as a paid Law Clerk to help with research and writing projects, along with some administrative and logistical tasks. They will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of our work, from issue campaigns to coalition management and stakeholder engagement.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Conduct legal and policy research, draft memoranda, and support research and drafting of public education materials, such as fact sheets and talking points.
  • nominees, and confirmed judges, in order to better inform partner organizations and the public at large.
  • Aid with administrative and logistical tasks, including data entry and clerical duties and helping with possible event planning and execution.

Research Coordinator

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a detail-oriented Research Coordinator to lead our vetting of judicial nominees and our analysis of the records of current judges, in order to better inform our communications and digital strategies and educate partner organizations and the public at large. The Research Coordinator’s work will be critical in helping Demand Justice Initiative build a movement to restore the federal courts’ ideological balance and legitimacy. This position reports to the Chief Counsel.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Produce extensive research reports compiling information from public sources, including news clips, videos of speeches and panels, social media, personal financial disclosures, property, court, and business records, research databases, and campaign contributions
  • Help develop communications and digital strategies to enhance the public’s awareness about the record of judicial nominees
  • Draft and/or fact-check public education materials, such as fact sheets and messaging guidance.
  • Advise on script development for our television and digital advertising.
  • Coordinate with allied organizations to ensure our research work is comprehensive but also efficient.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • 2-3 years of previous research experience on a political campaign or at progressive organization
  • Highly motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented and well-organized
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with sharp political instincts
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others
  • Familiarity with Lexis-Nexis, public records requests, analyzing primary source documents, and commonly-used research databases

Digital Director

Position Summary

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a Digital Director to help build our movement to restore the ideological balance and legitimacy of the federal courts. This is a senior role in a quickly growing advocacy non-profit that is responsible for leading our efforts across digital platforms, including social media, email, website, and online fundraising. The digital director will lead an internal team of strategists and creatives, as well as external creative partners, and have responsibilities for growing the program to meet the organization’s objectives.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Manage day-to-day digital communications activities for Demand Justice and the internal processes related to those activities.
  • Develop and execute digital advocacy plans, including creative concepts, strategies, and tactics, to advance Demand Justice Initiative’s goals.
  • Work in partnership with the leadership and digital teams to create paid media budgets and strategies to increase Demand Justice’s reach to key audiences.
  • Develop internal processes for managing the efficient ideation, creation, and execution of digital campaign plans from concept to completion.
  • Measure the effectiveness of digital advocacy efforts, communicating regularly to leadership, and making decisions to optimize the program.
  • Manage digital staff and external vendors, and delegate responsibilities accordingly.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of all digital programs and regularly communicate to leadership.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • 8-10 years in a digital advocacy role. Political campaign or digital agency experience is preferred.
  • Experience leading a digital advocacy program across multiple channels.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with sharp attention to detail and process.
  • Experience managing a team and effectively delegating responsibilities.
  • Excellent project management skills. Experience working in tools like Slack, Asana, Action Network, and ActBlue.
